Psalm 19:7, 10-11
The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

Sometimes one word is all that stands between the truth and a lie, between life and death. In the Reformation, that word was sola, “alone.” At a time when leaders in the church claimed to speak for God, the Protestant Reformers reminded God’s people that Scripture alone is our infallible authority.
While many people sought to work their way to heaven, the Reformers boldly proclaimed the only true gospel: salvation is by God’s grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, to the glory of God alone. That word, “alone,” made all the difference then, and the same is true today.
The Heart of the Reformation is a 90-day devotional on the Five Solas, written by Ligonier Ministries. The book delves into the core biblical truths of the Reformation, displaying the reliability of God's Word and the depths of His mercy. It was published on November 23, 2021 by Ligonier Ministries.

📌 WHO wrote this book: This book was written by Charles Haddon Spurgeon, a famous Baptist preacher and author. Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was born in Essex, England. He became a Christian in 1850 and a year later was the pastor of a small Baptist church. In 1854 he was called to the pastorate of New Park Street Baptist Chapel in Southwark, London. His preaching attracted great crowds, so much so that a new building, the Metropolitan Tabernacle, was erected. During his ministry he built up a congregation which numbered about 6,000. As well as being a popular preacher, Spurgeon was involved in several charitable organisations, including an orphanage at Stockwell. Spurgeon also had an extensive influence through literature, in particular his sermons which appeared in pamphlet form weekly. He also wrote “The Cheque Book of the Bank of Faith”, a further compilation of devotional readings.
📌 WHAT: This book contains a wealth of Biblical meditations from Spurgeon with applications that are relevant for contemporary Christians. Spurgeon's characteristically pithy comments hit home with a wit and elegance rarely found in other writing. Spurgeon weaves a verse of Scripture into each devotion, helping readers draw deeper meaning out of the selected passages.
📌 WHEN & WHERE was this book written / published: This book was originally published by Christian Focus Publications in Scotland, May 2014.
📌 WHY was this book written / published: Charles Haddon Spurgeon was one of the most influential people of the second half of the 19th Century. At the heart of his desire to preach was a fierce love of people, a desire that meant he did not neglect his pastoral ministry. This book was written and published to provide Christians with spiritual nourishment and to strengthen their relationships with God.

📌 WHO: Prabhudas Koshy is pastor of Gethsemane Bible-Presbyterian Church (Singapore) whom God has used to establish Bible Witness Media Ministry, Bible Witness TV as well as Gethsemane Bible Institute. Originally from Kerala, India, he now serves in Singapore and oversees mission churches and branches of Gethsemane Bible Institute in several countries. He also serves as Academic Dean of Far Eastern Bible College (Singapore) and editor of the Bible Witness Magazine, freely distributed globally for the edification of believers.
📌 WHAT: “My Soul’s Delight” is a devotional that expounds one Bible verse at a time, with practical application for readers of any age. Each devotion is accompanied with a full-color illustration, making it especially accessible for young children. Volume I contains 25 illustrated devotionals; Volume II contains 30 illustrated devotionals, while Volume III contains 35 illustrated devotionals.
📌 WHEN: Volume 1 was published in 2011 while Volumes 2 & 3 were published in 2020.
📌 WHY this book stands out: Many spiritual books for children today are written narratively or thematically. This book breathes fresh air into the “Children’s category” of Christian and even Reformed devotionals:
- by providing literal, faithful and devotional explanations of the very Word of God, verse by verse. Books that begin with themes (such as the attributes of God) have their place, but books that begin with individual verses are rare and very well-needed in Christian literature for the young. This reaps several benefits (listed at the end of this review).
- Rather than choosing verse quotes from Bible versions based on their simplicity of expression, the Bible version used consistently throughout this book was chosen based on a much deeper understanding of the principles of faithful Scriptural translation and preservation. The difficulty of expression is not bypassed, but rather addressed through explanations that are understandable and effectively pastoral.
For those who wish to introduce the Authorised Version (AV) to readers early on in life, or are looking for a companion to the AV in later years, this becomes a handy tool.
- This book introduces the “Scripture interprets Scripture” hermeneutic to souls early on. For those who which to ground their children & families firmly upon the Word of God, this is rare, choice material.
📌 HOW: In this book, children are not only exposed to, but are also engaged by faithful exposition of singular verse, to the beauty and depth of truth awaiting them in every word and line of Scripture. These devotions are a great aid to memorising Bible verses from a young age and encourages careful and focused verse-by-verse Bible study from a young age. works great as an aid for family worship too. This is highly recommended to those who have yet to taste the efficacy of Scriptural exposition to young hearts & minds.
⭐️ Language Accessibility & Readability: The book is written in simple English that is easy for the intended audience of a family with children to read.
⭐️ Binding: The book is available in paperback format.
⭐️ Print Quality: Excellent full colour print on quality art paper.
⭐️ Price: Available at half price on our website.
Through the Year with William Still
Drawn from every book in the Bible, this selection, edited and arranged by David C.…
Through the Year with William Still by Banner of Truth is a book that is worth reading and buying. Here's why:
📌 WHO wrote this book: This book was written by William Still, a Scottish minister and author who was the pastor of Gilcomston South Church in Aberdeen, Scotland, for nearly fifty-two years. This devotional was co-published by Rutherford House and Banner of Truth Trust.
📌 WHAT: This book is a selection of daily Bible readings, edited and arranged by David C. Searle, that will take the reader through the year, through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, with William Still. These pages will explain what it means to live under the authority of Scripture, to exalt the glorious Person of Christ, and to rejoice in the wonder of the gospel.
This book also includes special readings for the New Year, a Wedding Day, an Anniversary, Bereavement and the Leap Year.
📌 WHEN & WHERE this book written / published: This book was originally published in the US, 2006.
📌 WHY was this book written / published: William Still seemed to live in the Bible. Convinced that it takes a whole bible to make a whole Christian, he preached his way through it several times, and in addition wrote notes on every chapter for his congregation. David Searle, the editor of Through the Year with William Still has served us all well by this selection from these daily Bible Reading notes. Here is a contagious love for God’s Word distilled in thought-provoking instruction, practical wisdom, and spiritual pleasure for each day of the year.
📌 HOW you will benefit from reading this: By reading this book, you will gain insight into the life and work of William Still, a remarkable man who devoted his life to preaching and teaching the Word of God. Quotes from William Still:
‘The whole tendency of faith is towards victory over evil; the will to fight persists, and in the end triumphs over the most depressing envelopment in evil. God is on the side of the dispersal and defeat of evil, even when he has allowed it to envelop his people for their sins’ (pp. 72-73).
'One last word: don't say that children cannot do this and will not do that. Parents are sometimes too prone to say what children will do and will not do. It is not the persuasion of the children that I am concerned about, but the persuasion of the parents. A godly winner of souls said to me the other day, 'Why is it that Christian parents want their children to be less godly and more worldly than they are?' I re-echo the question, and add this to it: 'Is is because Christian parents think they have missed something by being too Christian?' If so, one wonders how much they have savoured the depths of the love of God in Jesus Christ. What do you think?'
'It cannot be too often repeated that the Holy Spirit is God's only Worker. It is true that He chooses to work through His children, but our part is not the co-operation of help so much as that of willing consent. And even if we rate it higher, it is always His will that is done, and His power that it is done by, however active we seem to be. Otherwise it is not done at all. God's blessings flow down to us through pipes empty and clean. Now a pipe, to form a channel, must not elect to stand upon its end to see and be seem, but lie down in the muck and be covered over and forgotten. And every time we turn on a water tap, we should be grateful for the pipes that lie buried in the ground. Similarly our active part is to lie low, and let God work through us'
Endorsement:
To commend these Daily Bible Readings of William Still is both a privilege and a pleasure. Although my exposure to Mr Still's preaching ministry was episodic, I never failed to benefit deeply both from his insights into the text, and from the way he located the text within the flow of redemptive history. Whatever else William Still was he was never dull. These Daily Readings will enlarge your biblical horizons, lift up our Lord Jesus Christ, and challenge you to see the life of faith as a response to astonishing grace. —Ian Hamilton
Treasury of His Promises
The best books of Daily Readings are those which cause the Scriptures themselves to be…
📌 WHO wrote this book: The author of "Treasury of His Promises" is J. Graham Miller. John Graham Miller was born in New Zealand in October 1913. He grew up in a manse, and was blessed by the godly influence of his father who had spent his life contending against liberalism. He left school in 1929 at the age of sixteen to work in an office and later began training at night-school to be a lawyer. He later became a barrister and was able to use his training on the mission field.
In 1941, while still having a year of his theological training to go, he married Flora McDonald and – less than two weeks later – was ordained a missionary to Tongoa in the New Hebrides because of the need there due to his predecessor having to return home. Here he encouraged the church towards independence. God’s Spirit moved and revival spread through the island and to other islands.
Returning home for his children’s education in 1952 he became minister of Papakura near Auckland. Here again he saw the blessing of God with many conversions and daughter churches being formed.
At the end of 1965 he moved to Australia to become principal of the Melbourne Training Institute. After only four years, opposition arose against him for his Calvinism and he resigned. This was followed by a three year appointment as Principal of the new Presbyterian Bible College in the New Hebrides.
His final ministry was in St Giles Presbyterian Church in Sydney, from 1974-1980. He and his beloved wife Flora then retired to Wangaratta in Victoria. Preaching continued and he was used to encourage the continuing Presbyterian church in that state. Many books were written including a seven volume work on the history of the church in the New Hebrides. The esteem in which Graham Miller was held by the people of the New Hebrides was evidenced when a day of mourning was held in Vanuatu at his death in 2008.
Graham Miller’s story is told in the autobiographical A Day’s March Nearer Home, edited by Iain H. Murray and published by the Trust in 2010. The Trust also publishes his compilations, An A-Z of Christian Truth and Experience, Calvin’s Wisdom, and The Treasury of his Promises.

A leader among evangelical students in New Zealand in the 1930’s, after legal and theological training, J. Graham Miller, with his wife, Flora, went to the New Hebrides (Vanuatu) in missionary service. Thereafter working for the advancement of the cause of Christ in those islands, and in churches in New Zealand and Australia, Dr Miller has been widely known and loved. His commitment to the Westminster Confession has rallied a younger generation of Presbyterian ministers in Australia, while his expository preaching has been used of God to the help of many churches, colleges, and missionary societies.
Quotes:
'A miracle of God was necessary if there was to be resurrection; a miracle of creation by the life-giving God. The resurrection-hope pre-supposes the faith in creation.’
If it was 'not good that man should be alone' when he lived in unbroken communion with God, how much more significant is marriage in our society when man lives outside Eden among thorns and thistles?

A pastor of forty years who has throughout his ministry found the Puritans to be a great source of spiritual encouragement, David MacKinnon presents here 366 extracts from the works of the Puritan pastor Richard Sibbes, which may be used each day of the year by readers as an aid to devotion.
WHO: David B. MacKinnon was raised in Hopkins, Minnesota, earning his Masters of Divinity at Bethel Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. He ministered as a pastor for 40 years, serving three Converge (Baptist General Conference) churches in the Chicago, Illinois area, recently retiring from Westchester Evangelical Free Church in Des Moines, Iowa. Through the joys and challenges of Dave’s ministry the Puritan writers have been a great source of spiritual encouragement, spiritual exhortation, and Biblical understanding. Dave and his wife Linda have three children and four young grandsons. Along with reading and walking, Dave has found that retirement provides new opportunities to serve and minister to his family, church, and community.
Born in England in 1577, Richard Sibbes was expected to become a wheelwright like his father, but his passion for learning caused him to attend St. John’s College. Converted to Christianity around the age of 25, he earned a B.D. and preached in Cambridge and London. After being granted a Doctorate in Divinity, he became known as the “heavenly Doctor Sibbes.” The Works of Richard Sibbes is available today in seven volumes, with Sibbes’ gift of illuminating Scripture’s meaning still evident today. Other Richard Sibbes books include The Tender Heart, where he guides readers to embracing Christ-centered grace; The Bruised Reed, a book that demonstrates why he was known for his ability to comfort others; and Josiah’s Reformation, a book that reminds us how true reformation comes from the heart. Although Richard Sibbes wrote his books more than 400 years ago, they are still relevant today.
WHAT: Each extract has been carefully selected, and a suitable accompanying Scripture text from the ESV provided at the start of each daily reading. Occasional antiquated words in the original have been updated, and overly long sentences have been shortened, but all with a view to retain Sibbes’ flow and meaning for present-day readers.
For those who have never encountered Sibbes before, this volume will serve as an excellent introduction. All will find in these daily readings spiritual refreshment for the soul, coming from one who in his day was known, appropriately, as the ‘heavenly doctor.’
WHEN & WHERE: Published in the USA by the Banner of Truth Trust, 2022.
WHY: Benefit from these 8 characteristics of Puritan preaching (listed by J.I. Packer in his book, “A Quest for Godliness”), also found in these sermon extracts of Richard Sibbes:
- Puritan preaching was expository in its method.
- Puritan preaching was doctrinal in its content.
- Puritan preaching was orderly in its arrangement.
- Puritan preaching was popular in its style.
- Puritan preaching was Christ-centred in its orientation.
- Puritan preaching was experimental in its interests.
- Puritan preaching was piercing in its applications.
- Puritan preaching was powerful in its manner.
HOW is Sibbes’ writing relevant and powerful for today: Based on “Meet the Puritans” by Joel Beeke and Randall Pederson, literature such as this book:
- 1. shapes life by Scripture.
- marries doctrine and practice.
- focuses on Christ.
- shows how to handle trials.
- shows how to live in two worlds.
- shows us true spirituality.
⭐️ Language Accessibility & Readability: Each extract has been carefully selected, and a suitable accompanying Scripture text provided at the start of each daily reading.

📌 WHEN was this book written / published: This book was originally published in 2006.
📌 WHERE was this book written / published: This book was published by Banner of Truth Trust, which is based in Edinburgh, Scotland and Carlisle, Pennsylvania¹.
📌 WHY was this book written / published: While much is known about Susannah Spurgeon’s famous husband C.H. Spurgeon, comparatively little is known about the woman who supported the great preacher through the many years of his long and fruitful ministry at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London. This book was written and published to help address this imbalance.
📌 HOW you will benefit from reading this: By reading this book, you will gain insight into the life and work of Susannah Spurgeon, a remarkable woman who supported her husband's ministry and did great work for God despite suffering from a debilitating chronic illness. You will also be able to read her daily meditations on selected texts of Scripture and be inspired by her spiritual devotion to Christ.
This will be a great encouragement, perhaps even to single women who are praying about, or preparing towards marriage. The anecdotal account of Charles & Susannah Spurgeon’s love story will not merely engage, but may even guide, instruct and perhaps even correct some of the potential female readers of the autobiographical section of this book. Help them to understand the high calling of women married to men in the ministry, and to emulate the selflessness, generous charity, and meek spirit of servanthood which characterised Mrs Spurgeon and ought to be demonstrated even today.

⭐️ Language Accessibility & Readability: 6.5/10
Expect the use of certain terms and vocabulary which extends beyond our mundane 21st century command of English. Spanning approximately 4-6 pages, each devotion will require a decent commitment of time and focus on meditation. If you’re looking for a quick-read, consider the other options which are mostly one-page reads. Expect a more introspective and frank application, instead of a faithfully expository interpretation, of each cited verse.

Jewels from John Newton: Daily Readings from the Works of John Newton
John Newton (1725–1807) was a trophy of God’s grace. His transformation from a blasphemous slave…
📚 Jewels of John Newton
📌 WHO is John Newton? BORN in London in 1725, deprived of the godly influence of his mother before he was seven years old, John Newton was but two years at school before he went, at the age of eleven, on his first voyage with his father, a sea captain. From that time till the age of thirty, when his health was broken by a stroke, Newton endured the wild rigours of a life before the mast, including being press-ganged aboard a naval vessel and flogged when captured after desertion. Only his love for the youthful Mary Catlett preserved him from suicide. He was released from the navy only to join in the slave traffic across the Atlantic, and was reduced almost to death on the Guinea coast before being delivered by a friend of his father’s.
Throughout these sad events there ran a Divine purpose; and while Newton forgot the Saviour whom his mother had so often com mended to him in childhood, and while he became, like one of old, a ‘blasphemer and injurious,’ it was all leading to a day—in the midst of a tremendous storm at sea—when he was brought to say: ‘I stood in need of an Almighty Saviour, and such a one I found described in the New Testament. The Lord had wrought a marvellous thing.’
After his seafaring days he became tide-surveyor in Liverpool, a thriving slave port with a population of 22,000. It was here that Newton became acquainted with the great evangelist, George Whitefield, and soon he also came to know other leaders of the Evangelical Revival such as William Grimshaw and Henry Venn. His own thoughts were now turned to the ministry, and after several disappointments he was at length settled in 1764 in the Buckinghamshire parish of Olney – a name immortalized by the hymns which he and the poet William Cowper wrote for the mid-week meetings of the church.
In his sixteen years at Olney, Newton found a good field for exercising his gift as ‘the letter writer par excellence of the Evangelical Revival.’ The dreadful condition from which he had been saved, the long struggle he went through before he came to a clear understanding of the gospel, and the years of patient waiting for an opening in the Church, all served to prepare Newton for this work. He was given a thorough knowledge of the workings of the human heart and of the Lord’s dealings with his people.
Newton became minister of St. Mary Woolnoth, London, in 1779, where he continued to preach until almost the end of his life in 1807. Being advised by Richard Cecil in 1806 to discontinue preaching, he gave the memorable reply. ‘I cannot stop. What! shall the old African blasphemer stop while he can speak?’
Fun fact: In Olney, Buckinghamshire, England today stands a Cowper and Newton Museum to uphold the memory of these two hymnwriters and their testimonies of salvation.
His tombstone inscription reads, “John Newton, Clerk, once an infidel and libertine, a servant of slaves in Africa, was, by the rich mercy of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, preserved, restored, pardoned, and appointed to preach the faith he had long laboured to destroy.”
📌 WHAT: This Daily Devotional consisting of readings from the works of John Newton. They are largely drawn from Newton’s prolific correspondence and covers a wide variety of topics. Although written more than two hundred years ago, it remains as relevant and edifying as ever. References to the respective original work of Newton is provided at the end of each devotion.
📌 WHEN & WHERE: Printed in the USA, 2016.
📌 WHY read John Newton: John Newton is remarkably honest and transparent in readily admitting his struggles, sinfulness, and failures. This aspect of his writings will be an encouragement to you; it will bolster the assurance that your own daily battles and humiliations are not unique, but a “[temptation that] is common unto men”.
In addition, he repeatedly reminds his readers of God’s trustworthiness, no matter what circumstances they might be facing.
Enter the thought and heart-life of this grand old hymnwriter and come to know the theological mind and experiential reflections which sustained, informed and enabled the hymnwriter to be a blessing to the world, even till today. Become acquainted with John Newton, not merely through his hymns, but also through his writings, and be equally, if not more significantly, encouraged by his letters, as by his songs.
📌 HOW this devotional came to be: This selection by Miller Ferrie was made from Banner of Truth’s revised four-volume edition of Newton’s Works, published in 2015. Thus, herewith contains material that will not be found in the old six-volume set, making this devotional selection unique and fresh.

'WE NEED A SAVIOUR, AND HE MUST BE A MIGHTY ONE; BUT THOUGH OUR WANTS AND SINS ARE GREAT AND NUMEROUS, WE ARE CONVINCED THAT THE CHARACTER OF CHRIST IS SUFFICIENT.'
ENDORSEMENTS
‘Some men are known for the hymns they write. John Newton is one— “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound” being his most famous. And some are known as preachers. John Newton was also one. But a very small number of men are known for the profound wisdom to be found in their personal letters. And John Newton stands almost unmatched in this class. The Scriptures urge us to “get wisdom,” and outside of the pages of Scripture itself there can be few better places to find it than in Jewels from John Newton.’ — SINCLAIR B. FERGUSON

Quotes:
‘Patient submission to God’s will in affliction shows a great deal of wisdom and piety. We must acknowledge God’s hand in affliction, and trust his holiness and justice. . . The skill of a pilot is most evident in a storm, and so is a Christian’s grace in the storm of affliction.’
– Thomas Watson
‘When God resolved to judge men for their sin, he lodged Noah in an ark, and kept him alive as a spark in the midst of the sea. In all generations he has been a dwelling place to keep his people safe here, and transport them above. He is never weary in his providence, and never faints in his care.’ -STEPHEN CHARNOCK
‘The Psalms are a Christian’s choicest oracle to fly to in times of distress. Was not the Psalmist guided by an infallible Spirit? How often are the Psalms quoted by Christ and the apostles to establish divine truth! Let us embrace and pursue this holy duty of singing the praises of the Psalms which is the very suburbs of heaven.’ – JOHN WELLS
For most Christians (including ministers), the works of Church Fathers remain an unexplored territory.
As editor Nick Needham (lecturer in church history at Highlands Theological College) points out that the Reformers held the early church councils in the highest regard. Calvin said their work was ‘the pure and authentic exposition of Scripture, which the holy Fathers applied with spiritual wisdom’.
This book includes the work twelve different Fathers, ranging from the second to the fifth centuries AD) -- one for each month of the year. There is a glossary and Scripture index, and source index to show where the readings can be found.
Review by Dennis Hill, Evangelical Times:
"For those who have neglected the Early Church Fathers, this is an excellent introduction. There is about them something of the zeal we find in new believers. Yet, we find them much more focused in defining doctrinal truth and vigorously combating error than is usual among modern evangelicals.
These are some of the men who ironed out and defined orthodoxy concerning the Trinity and Christology, for which we are deeply in debt. Athanasius, for instance, was exiled five times by hostile emperors in his 45-year battle for the truth of the deity of Christ.
The readings are sometimes lofty, sometimes earthy, sometimes argument, sometimes worship. One piece of sound advice from Ambrose reads, ‘Praise God, don’t interrogate him’. Cyril of Alexandria is excellent on the two-natures-yet-one-person character of Christ.
Basil of Caesarea calls one Gnostic, ‘weak-brained’! Later he mourns over the condition of the church with words that would befit modern times. Gregory of Nyssa speaks movingly on the death of Christ, ‘By his wounds he cured our wound’.
These readings reveal their authors to be more doctrinally focused than we are today. My favourites were Chrysostom and Augustine. Highly recommended!"

Puritans Day by Day
Everyone knows the value and the power of a brief and arresting saying. It is…
Everyone knows the value and the power of a brief and arresting saying. It is like a light that shines in darkness, or a cup of cold water to a thirsty soul. How often do we leaf through the pages of a book without much interest only to be suddenly gripped by some short, crisp, unexpected saying which awakens our attention and makes us feel like one who has just discovered hidden treasure!
WHO: The quotes from 'The Puritans Day by Day' have been drawn mainly out of the writings of the Puritans, men who excelled in their power of deep insight into both the word of God and the human heart, and who also had the rare gift of quaint and distinctive expression. Author Harry John Horn was born in Poplar, London c. 1868. He was trained at Cardiff Baptist College, and pastored churches in South Wales, Northamptonshire, and London before retiring from the ministry in 1935. During the First World War he served with the Soldiers Christian Fellowship in France. Described as a man of ‘forceful personality and courage’, he was a ‘great Bible teacher’ and an ‘enthusiastic seeker of souls for his Master’.
HOW was this book compiled: H. J. Horn travelled extensively through a wide range of devotional literature to compile these wise and thought-provoking statements from the Puritans that are as fresh and new as they are piquant and tender, thus giving us a year's supply of ‘pearls of wisdom’.
WHAT: Each day contains a small handful of quotes on a particular theme, such as 'The Power and Weakness of the Law of God' (21 March) and 'Promises and Prayer' (30 September). In days when minds are dull and weary, this book will be a rich source of mental and spiritual refreshment.
WHY read this: The Puritans Day by Day will be particularly helpful to young preachers, who would do well to keep this volume, with its careful ordering and its full indexes, close to hand. In days when minds are dull and spirits are weary, they will find it to be a rich source of mental and spiritual refreshment.
WHEN & WHERE: First published in London as “The Puritan Remembrancer” (1928), it has been republished in 2016 by Banner of Truth Trust, Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom.
